What is a Spain Student Visa?
A Spain Student Visa is a national visa for eligible non-EU nationals undertaking qualifying studies or educational activities in Spain for more than 90 days.
The visa issued abroad incorporates the corresponding long-stay study authorisation. For longer stays, a Foreigner Identity Card, known as the TIE, is also required after arrival.
Although commonly called a student residence permit, the underlying immigration status is generally estancia de larga duración por estudios: an authorised long-term stay for study purposes. It is legally different from an ordinary residence authorisation. These distinctions appear in the Spanish Immigration Regulation.
“Spanish student visa” and “Spain study visa” usually refer to this same general route. The applicable conditions depend on the programme, not the wording used to describe it.
Do UK citizens need a student visa for Spain?
British citizens can generally visit Spain for short-term studies without a visa, provided their total stay remains within the Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period and they meet the entry conditions. Previous visits to other Schengen countries count towards that limit. See the UK Government’s entry requirements for Spain.
For a study stay exceeding 90 days, British citizens normally need the appropriate Spanish study visa or authorisation, unless another immigration status already permits the stay.
Legal requirement
Admission to a Spanish university or language school does not itself give you permission to remain in Spain beyond your authorised stay. Your educational admission and immigration permission are separate requirements.
What if I live in the UK but hold another nationality?
Your nationality and UK immigration status must both be considered.
A UK residence permission does not automatically grant permission to study in Spain. It may, however, allow you to use the Spanish consular application procedure in the United Kingdom, subject to the applicable jurisdiction requirements.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally follow a different framework. Existing Spanish residence rights or qualifying family rights can also change the position.

Which studies qualify for a Spanish Student Visa?
Not every course advertised to international students qualifies for the same immigration route.
The institution’s recognition, the qualification awarded, the programme structure and the teaching format should be reviewed before you commit to the application.
Check your study activity
Which type of study or training are you planning in Spain?
Different study and training activities are subject to different requirements. Identify the category closest to your proposed programme and the main points that need to be checked.
University degree, master’s or qualifying doctoral studies
What needs to be checkedRecognised institution, qualifying higher-education programme and full-time study
Higher vocational or artistic education
What needs to be checkedRecognition of the institution, qualification level and attendance requirements
Post-compulsory secondary education
What needs to be checkedAuthorised programme, full-time study and applicable age conditions
Spanish or another co-official language
What needs to be checkedEligible in-person course at an official language school or appropriately accredited centre
Secondary-school exchange
What needs to be checkedRecognised pupil-mobility programme, admission and organised care or accommodation
Volunteering or another training programme
What needs to be checkedWhether the activity fits a specific category and satisfies its additional conditions
The Spanish Ministry distinguishes higher education and post-compulsory secondary studies from other qualifying training activities . The applicable requirements depend on the specific programme and the applicant’s circumstances.
Can I obtain a student visa for a Spanish language course?
Potentially, yes. The language-training category covers qualifying in-person study of Spanish or Spain’s co-official languages at the institutions specified by the regulations.
For Spanish courses, this includes official language schools and centres accredited in Spain by the Instituto Cervantes. Restrictions also apply where the language is the applicant’s mother tongue or an official language of their country of nationality.
A language course should not be assumed to provide the same work, family or in-country application rights as a university programme.
Do online courses qualify?
A fully online course should not be assumed to support a move to Spain under the student route.
Certain recognised programmes can use an approved hybrid format, but attendance requirements depend on the category. The course’s immigration eligibility should be established from its official structure and recognition, rather than its marketing description.
Research employment and standalone internships may require a different authorisation, even when a university is involved.
Practical Recommendation
Before paying non-refundable course fees, ask for the institution’s recognition details, programme dates, teaching format and qualification awarded. These details can affect your visa eligibility and your rights after arrival.
Spain Student Visa requirements
A successful application requires more than an acceptance letter. The documents must establish that the proposed studies qualify and that your personal circumstances satisfy the applicable immigration conditions.
Admission and enrolment
You must demonstrate admission to the relevant recognised or authorised institution and provide evidence of payment of the required registration, enrolment or equivalent fees.
The admission documentation should clearly identify the programme, its duration and the educational activity you will undertake. A general expression of interest or an application awaiting acceptance is not equivalent to confirmed admission.
Passport and immigration status
The current rules require a passport or recognised travel document with at least one year’s validity.
Applicants using the UK consular route must also establish that they fall within the relevant consular jurisdiction. Non-British residents should prepare the required evidence of their UK immigration status.
Financial resources and healthcare
You must show sufficient resources for your stay and return journey, together with acceptable healthcare cover for the intended period.
Tuition, maintenance funds and healthcare are separate parts of the assessment. Meeting one does not remove the others.
Age and applications involving minors
Age requirements vary by programme. The Ministry’s guidance allows consular higher-education applications from students who have reached 17, while other categories have different conditions.
Where a minor is eligible, parental consent, custody and care arrangements may require additional evidence. A younger pupil’s application should be assessed under the appropriate school-mobility or other applicable framework.
The governing requirements are detailed in Article 35 of the Immigration Regulation.
How much money do you need for a Student Visa in Spain?
The normal maintenance benchmark is 100% of IPREM per month for the student.
At the time of this update, the SEPE’s published figures show monthly IPREM of €600. This is different from the minimum wage benchmark used for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa.
Where accompanying family members qualify, the additional benchmark is 75% of IPREM for the first family member and 50% for each further family member.
| Applicants | Monthly benchmark | Illustration for 12 months |
| Student only | €600 | €7,200 |
| Student and one qualifying family member | €1,050 | €12,600 |
| Student and two qualifying family members | €1,350 | €16,200 |
| Student and three qualifying family members | €1,650 | €19,800 |
| Each additional qualifying family member | Additional €300 | Additional €3,600 |
These are maintenance benchmarks, not a quotation for the total cost of studying in Spain. Tuition, return travel and other expenses must be considered separately. The assessment must cover the relevant period of stay, which may not be exactly 12 months.
Family eligibility must be established independently, having enough money does not create a right to bring relatives under every study category.
Legal requirement
Money used or allocated to tuition cannot also be counted as maintenance funds. Your evidence must demonstrate the resources required for living expenses and return travel separately from the cost of your studies.
Calculate your Spain Student Visa financial requirements
Choose the length of your stay and the number of qualifying family members to estimate your maintenance funds.
€600.00 per month × 12 months = €7,200.00
Based on a monthly IPREM of €600.00: 100% for the student, 75% for the first qualifying family member and 50% for each additional member. All applicants are assumed to stay for the same period.
This is a maintenance estimate, not your total relocation budget. Tuition, visa fees, insurance and return travel are separate. No adjustment for prepaid accommodation is applied. Confirm the period and supporting evidence needed for your application, particularly for partial months or longer programmes.
The result does not confirm visa or family eligibility. Amounts may change when IPREM is updated. See the Spanish Ministry’s financial requirements and the published IPREM figures.
Can my parents sponsor my studies?
Yes, family support can form part of the financial evidence.
The application should establish who is supporting you, their relationship to you, the resources available and their commitment to meet your costs. The London checklist specifies supporting documents for parental sponsorship, including a notarised undertaking and financial evidence.
Scholarships and qualifying student-loan documentation may also be relevant. Our review considers whether the documents explain the funding clearly and consistently.
Does prepaid accommodation reduce the amount required?
Properly evidenced accommodation paid in advance for the full stay can affect the financial assessment.
However, a reservation or deposit is not necessarily equivalent to fully prepaid accommodation. The documents and the remaining living costs should be reviewed before reducing the amount shown.
Can I rely on future part-time work?
Do not base your application on a job you merely hope to find after arrival.
The regulations allow certain employment evidence to be considered where the authorisation permits work, but a valid contract or firm offer is different from an expectation of future earnings.
Documents required for a Spain Student Visa from the UK
Your final document list should reflect the programme, duration, nationality, funding arrangements and any accompanying family members.
A typical application file includes:
- Completed national visa application form and compliant photograph.
- Valid passport and the required copies.
- Evidence of UK residence and consular jurisdiction.
- Admission documentation and proof of the required enrolment payment.
- Financial evidence, including sponsorship or scholarship documents where relevant.
- Acceptable healthcare-cover documentation.
- Medical certificate.
- Criminal-record certificates where required.
- Parental, representative or family documents where applicable.
Use the London study visa checklist published by BLS alongside the current legal requirements, rather than treating a generic online checklist as sufficient for every case.
Criminal-record certificates
For applicants of the relevant criminal-responsibility age whose authorised stay exceeds six months, criminal-record evidence concerns the countries where they have lived during the preceding five years.
The London checklist specifies an ACRO certificate for UK criminal records. Additional countries of residence may require separate certificates.
The certificate’s date, legalisation and translation must satisfy the applicable requirements. The London checklist currently specifies a six-month document-validity period unless the certificate itself provides longer validity.
Medical certificate
For the UK consular application, the current London checklist requires a medical certificate from all applicants, not only those planning to stay for more than six months.
It specifies a certificate issued within the preceding three months and addressing the public-health conditions covered by the International Health Regulations 2005.
The Ministry’s guidance treats qualifying applications submitted from within Spain differently and states that a medical certificate is not required for those in-country applications.
Health insurance and the Student GHIC
You need acceptable healthcare cover for the intended stay. Where an insurance policy is used, it must meet the applicable Spanish requirements; a standard holiday travel policy should not be assumed sufficient.
Importantly for UK applicants, the London checklist currently accepts the UK GHIC for student visas. The UK Government’s healthcare guidance for students in Spain directs eligible students to apply for a Student GHIC.
Check your eligibility and the coverage period before relying on it. Living in the UK does not, by itself, establish entitlement.
Apostilles and Spanish translations
UK public documents may need legalisation through the UK Government’s apostille service, together with an appropriate Spanish translation.
An apostille verifies the relevant signature, stamp or seal; it does not translate the document or confirm that its contents meet the visa requirements.
Before ordering translations, check whether the original, a certified copy or a notarised document is needed. Names, dates and the supporting apostille should be consistent throughout the file.
Practical Recommendation
Prepare a document schedule before ordering certificates, apostilles and translations. Coordinate their validity with your appointment and course start date, and review sponsorship documents before paying to legalise them.
How to apply for a Spain Student Visa from the UK
The UK consular visa application normally also initiates the corresponding study-authorisation procedure. Unlike the standard employed-worker route, there is no Spanish employer applying first for permission to hire you.

Get guidance on your student visa applicationCan I apply for a student authorisation while in Spain?
Yes, in qualifying circumstances. Applying from Spain is not available on identical terms to everyone who enrols on a course.
An adult who is lawfully present in Spain may apply for the higher-education authorisation, provided the relevant conditions and deadlines are met. Other study categories can require an existing Spanish residence authorisation rather than a short visitor stay.
For the ordinary in-country procedure, the application must be submitted at least two months before the applicant’s existing lawful status expires. It must also normally be submitted at least two months before studies begin.
Consequently, arriving as a visitor and waiting until the end of a 90-day stay is not a suitable application plan.
The application is for a Spanish stay authorisation, not a consular visa sticker. See the in-country procedure in Article 54.
Practical Recommendation
Before travelling with the intention of applying from Spain, have your course category, immigration status and remaining lawful stay assessed together. Do not assume that advice written for university students also applies to a language course.
How long does a Spain Student Visa application take?
The London application guidance publishes a legal decision period of one month from the day after submission, while explaining that further-document requests or an interview may extend the process. See the BLS processing information.
This is not a guarantee of receiving your passport within one month. Appointment availability, document preparation and additional checks affect the overall timetable.
For an ordinary qualifying application submitted from within Spain, the published decision period is two months. Specific institutional procedures can differ.
The advance application requirement and the decision period are separate: a one-month processing period does not mean you should wait until one month before your course starts.
How much does a Spain Student Visa cost?
The student visa fee for Spain depends on nationality, the duration of the stay and the applicable category.
The following amounts are those displayed for British applicants in the London national visa fee list.
| Fee category | Published fee for British applicants |
| Studies exceeding 90 days and lasting less than 180 days | £79 |
| Studies exceeding 180 days | £345 |
| Student’s family member | £345 per applicant |
For a stay of exactly 180 days, confirm the applicable category before payment: the published list labels its categories as less than and more than 180 days.
BLS also currently publishes a £14.85 service charge per application, separate from the visa fee. Delivery and notification services may involve further charges.
Additional costs can include medical certificates, criminal-record certificates, apostilles, translations, healthcare cover, TIE issuance and legal assistance. These are separate from tuition and maintenance funds.
If you are a UK resident with another nationality, do not assume the British visa fee applies. Confirm the current charge before submission.
After approval: entering Spain and obtaining your TIE
Check the visa and decision carefully before travelling. The visa’s validity, the authorised study period and the dates of the academic programme should be understood together.
Where the authorised stay exceeds six months, applicants entering with the study visa must request their TIE personally within one month of entry.
For a qualifying authorisation granted through an in-country application, Article 54 specifies the TIE application deadline by reference to the grant of the authorisation.
The NIE is an identification number. The TIE is the physical identity card. Neither should be confused with the underlying decision granting permission to stay.
Your post-arrival preparation should also address your accommodation, any necessary municipal registration and the institution’s enrolment formalities. TIE procedures are available through the Spanish administration’s immigration-procedures portal.
How long is a Spanish Student Visa valid?
The visa sticker and the underlying study authorisation can have different durations.
Under the current regulation, the visa may be issued for up to one year where the underlying authorisation lasts longer. For qualifying higher education, the authorisation can cover the official duration of the studies.
Other study or training authorisations generally follow the programme’s duration, subject to a one-year maximum.
Where a higher-education authorisation lasts more than one year, evidence of continuing enrolment must be provided annually at the beginning of each academic year. This is different from applying for an annual extension.
The detailed duration and maintenance rules appear in Article 55.
Can I extend my student authorisation?
An extension may be available if your circumstances and continuing studies satisfy the relevant conditions.
Applications are normally made during the two months before expiry. The rules also provide a three-month post-expiry filing window, but late submission can expose the applicant to a sanction and should not be treated as the preferred timetable.
Extensions are subject to category-specific limits. Higher education and post-compulsory secondary authorisations allow up to two extensions per authorisation; qualifying training activities generally allow one.
Language-study extensions also have additional academic or examination-evidence requirements.
A change of course or institution should therefore be reviewed before assuming that a new enrolment will support an extension.
Can you work in Spain with a Student Visa?
The answer depends on your study authorisation.
A qualifying higher-education authorisation automatically permits employed and self-employed work without a separate work-authorisation application, provided the activity is compatible with the studies.
The general maximum is 30 hours per week. Other conditions, including applicable geographical restrictions, must also be considered.
For other study or training categories, a separate work authorisation may be required. Specific rules apply to curricular placements and vocational training.
Legal requirement
A Spanish student visa does not give every student unrestricted permission to work. Confirm whether your authorisation includes work rights before accepting employment or starting self-employed activity, and observe the applicable hours and compatibility conditions.
These distinctions are established in Article 57 of the Immigration Regulation.
If your main purpose is full-time employment, our Spain Work Visa guidance may be more relevant. If you intend to relocate principally to work remotely for overseas businesses, consider whether the Digital Nomad Visa better matches your circumstances.
Can my partner or children accompany me?
The accompanying-family route is generally available to qualifying higher-education students and also applies to specialised healthcare training. It should not be assumed available for an ordinary language course.
Eligible relatives include a spouse, registered partner or duly evidenced stable partner, and qualifying minor children. Certain adult children with specific support needs arising from disability or illness can also qualify.
The Ministry’s guidance allows qualifying family visa applications alongside the student’s application or subsequently. Later applications must account for the requirement that at least 90 days remain on the student’s authorisation.
Each applicant needs the relevant relationship, financial, healthcare and personal documentation. Family permission is linked to the student’s status and does not authorise the family member to work. See the official student-family guidance.
Separate provisions may apply where a student needs a support person because of disability or illness.
Can I stay in Spain after completing my studies?
Completing a course does not automatically grant permanent residence or unrestricted work rights.
Depending on the qualification obtained and your circumstances, you may qualify to change to an employed or self-employed residence and work authorisation. The direct modification route is available for specified study and training categories; it does not apply identically to every course. See Article 190.
Qualifying higher-education graduates who have achieved at least European Qualifications Framework Level 6 may also apply for a residence authorisation to seek suitable employment or prepare a business project.
That authorisation can last up to 24 months and is not extendable. It is not itself a general work permit: the corresponding authorisation is required to take up the relevant employment or business activity. This route is governed by the seventeenth additional provision of Law 14/2013.
Review your options before the study authorisation expires, especially if you already have a job offer.
What happens if a Spain Student Visa is refused?
The refusal decision should explain the grounds and the available remedies.
Issues may concern the programme’s eligibility, the supporting documents, financial evidence, healthcare cover, immigration history or whether the stated purpose of the application has been established.
The appropriate response depends on the actual decision. A corrected application may be appropriate in some cases; in others, an administrative or judicial challenge should be considered.
We can review the refusal together with the original application and explain the available options within the agreed scope of advice.
Legal deadline
An expressly notified decision may carry a one-month deadline for an available reconsideration appeal or a two-month deadline for a direct judicial challenge. The correct remedy and calculation depend on the decision and procedural history. Have the notice reviewed promptly; submitting a new application does not preserve an appeal deadline.

Frequently asked questions about Student Visas for Spain
Do British citizens need a visa for a semester in Spain?
Normally, yes, if the intended study stay exceeds 90 days. A semester lasting four or five months should not be treated as a visa-free short visit.
Is a Spain Study Visa different from a Student Visa?
These expressions generally describe the same route. What matters legally is the specific study or training category and the authorisation granted.
Do I need a national visa for a course lasting between 90 and 180 days?
For a qualifying stay exceeding 90 days, the national study route normally applies. The six-month threshold affects certain additional requirements; it is not the starting point for needing study permission.
Can I apply before receiving an admission letter?
You can prepare your documents and obtain advice beforehand, but the application needs the required evidence of admission and enrolment. An undecided university application is not a substitute.
Can my parents provide the financial evidence?
Yes. Parental support can be used where properly documented. The file should establish the relationship, the commitment to support you and the funds available.
Is £345 the fee for every UK applicant?
No. The published fee depends on nationality and category. British applicants are currently charged different amounts for the shorter and longer study categories, and BLS charges separately.
Do I always need private health insurance?
Not necessarily. The London checklist currently accepts the UK GHIC for student visas. Check Student GHIC eligibility and coverage before deciding which evidence to submit.
Can I apply online from the UK?
The UK consular visa process should not be confused with an electronic application for an authorisation from within Spain. Follow the submission procedure applicable to your location and category.
Can I enter Spain as a tourist and apply later?
Only where the relevant in-country route is available and its conditions and deadlines are met. A university application and a language-course application can have different rules.
Can I work 30 hours a week on any student visa?
No. Automatic work rights apply to qualifying higher-education authorisations. Other categories may require separate permission, and any work must satisfy the applicable conditions.
Can my partner work as my student dependant?
The accompanying-family study authorisation does not grant work rights. A partner wishing to work needs to assess whether another immigration route is available.
Does every student need to renew annually?
No. A qualifying higher-education authorisation can cover the official duration of the studies. Annual proof of continuing enrolment may still be required.
Does a language course give me the same rights as a university degree?
No. Differences can affect in-country applications, work permission, accompanying family members, extensions and options after completing the course.
Can Díaz & Associates guarantee my visa?
No. We provide legal advice and application support within the agreed scope. The Spanish authorities make the decision.
